Impossible Foods
Impossible Foods’ mission is to avert impending environmental catastrophe by eliminating the need for animals as a food-production technology. The company was founded in 2011 by Pat Brown, M.D., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry at Stanford University, co-founder of the Public Library of Science, and inventor of the DNA microarray. Their strategy is to make the world’s most delicious, nutritious, affordable, and sustainable meat, fish, and dairy — from plants.
3 Reasons Why We’re Invested with Impossible Foods
Animal agriculture has a destructive impact on our planet
We felt a strong alignment in the importance of their mission. Animal agriculture uses over 45% of Earth’s land area, over 25% of all freshwater, and is responsible for 15-18% of global GHG emissions. Compared to meat from animals, Impossible Burger production uses 96% less land, 87% less water, and produces 89% fewer greenhouse gas emissions. The company’s mission is to save the planet by replacing the need for animals as a food-production technology, globally, by 2035.
The market is ready for permanent change
The animal-derived food industry is a $1.7 trillion market globally, with 10 billion pounds of ground beef alone sold every year in the US. Whilst until very recently plant-based meats were seen as a niche product for vegetarians, consumer attitudes toward animal-derived foods are quickly changing. Today over 50% of the U.S. 18-24 yo population consumes plant-based meat at least once a month and Impossible is helping to drive this movement. 95% of Impossible consumers identify as meat-eaters.
Impossible Foods have built a world-class R&D team & IP portfolio
The company has created an innovative food technology platform to make meat, dairy, and fish from plants. They have over 150 issued and pending patents, both US and international, and significant intellectual property around the use of heme, the molecule behind what makes meat taste like meat.
